The Cool Cucumber: the perfect (easy) side dish

Today I'm paying homage to my maternal Hungarian roots. Living in San Antonio has meant that I've adopted quite a few flavors and recipes from my husband's Hispanic heritage. But, today we go back to the Ohio Valley where my mom's family settled and bring forward a delicious, easy, and oh-so-cool cucumber salad that is the PERFECT accompaniment to almost any cooked meat. Usually when I do a cucumber salad I'm putting on a vinaigrette and my family loves it that way. Even Will, my … [Read more...]

When You Don’t Think You Have Enough

Is it too cliché to say that one must sometimes go away in order to see where they are? I’m writing this on my flight back to San Antonio from my 25th college reunion at Creighton University. I’m exhausted and exhilarated and, to be honest, a little uneasy about returning home. The weekend gave me such an opportunity to reconnect not only with friends but also with my former “before-husband-and-children” self. But, honestly, I almost didn’t go. For at least two months before the reunion … [Read more...]

The Lightness of Distance

I've just landed in Chicago. All week I've been  reciting reasons why I shouldn't board the plane this morning at 7:30 am.  And, in fact, I had Scott last night at 10:30 pm checking to see if I could at least get a later flight--I hadn't packed a thing and we had just shaved the head of our youngest child. Picadillo: Fast food that you’ll love

The passing of Labor Day means that there is no more pretending that we are just "easing" into the school year. We are full speed ahead and already over scheduled with back to school nights, projects, soccer practices and games, birthdays, and scouts. Right now I'm still a stickler about family meals and sitting together for dinner, but I've had to concede every Wednesday for soccer practices which start as early as 5:30 for Luke and Will. So dinner for them is around 4:30 and Scott feeds the … [Read more...]

Doo Wopping on Date Night at Smokey Joe’s

If you are like me and my husband, even though you SWORE at the beginning of 2014 that DATE NIGHTS WOULD HAPPEN AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. . .they haven't. The reasons are always valid and numerous and. . .to be honest it is that darn inertia: an object at rest remains at rest. . .because sometimes it seems easier to just stay at home and put the kids to sleep ourselves. So, when another blogger offered tickets to see the show, Smokey Joe's Cafe at the Woodlawn Theater, I jumped at the chance to … [Read more...]
